T20 WORLD CUP LEGACY FUND HITS RUNS FOR UP AND COMING FEMALE CRICKET STARS

The NSW Government is helping create pathways for up and coming female cricket stars across the Bathurst region and beyond.

Member for Bathurst Paul Toole loves his cricket and has taken great delight in announcing funding of $3250 for the Bathurst District Junior Cricket Association (BDJCA) to encourage young women to take up the sport.

Mr Toole said there has been a dramatic increase in the number of girls taking up cricket because of the increased media coverage of matches.

“Most followers of women’s cricket will know that Lisa Griffith hails from Bathurst, so wouldn’t it great to have more girls follow in her footsteps,” he said.

“The funding boost for Bathurst comes as a result of the announcement of the successful projects in the final round of NSW ICC T20 World Cup Cricket Legacy Fund.

“This final round of funding will see grassroots cricket across the state share in the $2 million awarded to projects across the State.”

President of the Bathurst District Junior Cricket Association (BDJCA) Stephen Cain said the funds would be well used and go towards purchasing equipment and organising a gala day for female players.

“The aim is to do everything we can to promote and nurture girls taking up the sport of cricket,” he said.

“There’s never been this much interest in the girls’ game and we have to capitalise on this the best we can.”

Cricket NSW Chief Executive Officer Lee Germon congratulated the successful recipients, acknowledging the role the legacy fund has played in helping to grow participation.

“Through the wonderful generosity of the NSW Government, $6 million in grants has been distributed to clubs and councils right across NSW to support participation growth and leave a lifelong legacy for our cricket communities”, Mr Germon said.

“The past two rounds of the Fund have had an incredible impact on cricket in NSW and this final round will be no different. Congratulations to all of the successful recipients and thank you for your support of cricket in your community.”

The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will be held in 2022, with seven matches proposed to be held in Sydney. Fixtures and ticketing details will be available in 2021.
